Here’s how I fixed my leaking kitchen faucet and you can too

Is your faucet leaking again? Are you tired of hearing the non-stop sound of drop splattering on the floor? Well, then it is time to get your tools out and fix the leaking kitchen faucet yourself. If you prolong this moment, you will only end up losing more water and soon enough it will turn into an even bigger problem. Not sure how to proceed with it?

Just follow these simple steps and your kitchen faucet will be fixed in no time. It took me about 45 minutes to do so with 0 plumbing experience and shouldn’t take you nay longer either.   • Adjustable wrench or C-wrench

Steps to follow

  • The first step would be to turn off the water supply to your faucet to ensure that the water doesn’t spill out when you are trying to fix the faucet. All you have to do it just twist the handles which are connected to the water supply beneath the sink in the clockwise direction to shut it off.
  • Empty your sink of any residual water by using a sink plug or a rag as you don’t want the residual water to fall down and interrupt your work.
  • Figure out which type of Faucet do you own. There can be various types of kitchen faucets installed in your kitchen and determining which type of faucet you have is important. If you own a compression faucet, you will notice it on sight with its two screw handles, one each for hot and cold water respectively. Other types of faucets will have a single swiveling arm which would be used to get both cold and hot water. But if you have other types of faucets, you might need to dismantle the faucet before you can determine which type of faucet it is because other faucets have different internal mechanisms. For example, ball faucets contain a ball bearing while cartridge faucets contain a cartridge with a decorative cap and ceramic-disk faucet contains a ceramic cylinder.
  • Now remove the handle of the faucet and remove the decorative cap if necessary.
  • Once you have removed the handle, time to unscrew the nut beneath the handle with the help of the wrench. Then you will find a stem underneath it which lies on an O-ring which in turn lies on a seat washer. The most likely reason for your faucet leaking is that this rubber seat washer has been worn out and needs to be replaced.
  • Once the nut has been unscrewed, you need to pull out the step. This will allow you to take a better look at the O-ring and the seat washer. In case the dripping was from the faucet handle, then you will need to replace the O-ring as well.
  • Unscrew the upside-down screw from the seat washer to remove it and keep it aside. Once you have removed the old seat washer, time to install a new one in its place. So make sure you buy a seat washer of the correct size for the replacement and use plumber’s grease before installing it.
  • Once all this is done and you have successfully installed the new seat washer, reassemble all the parts of the faucet and test its working now. If there are no leakages anymore, then your work is done and you can finally relax now.

MAMA BEATS CANCER

Life. It’s beautiful, an absolute blessing and can also be completely and utterly confusing and painful. Each day on this Earth a blessing with much beauty in both the dark and light. As humans,  we’re inevitably bound to experience some sort of suffering.  During these times, we have a  choice to revert to our old ways or shed awareness around new ways to better ourselves and the world around us.  All of us have a different purpose/calling/gift to share with the world. Understanding our purpose sometimes becomes more clear after experiencing these challenges.

Change is happening every second. Our cells are regenerating and deteriorating in this very moment. New people come in and out of our lives, as do tragedies, sickness and unfortunate events. Sometimes the dark moments feel as if nothing else matters and time has stopped.  Whatever your challenge is, know that you’re not alone. When we get to that dark spot, we can only move into the light. These obstacles do indeed strengthen our soul, further our progression and evolution as a human. Its hard to see this in the thick of it all, but know your journey is not only making you stronger, but is inspiring others to do the same.

My mother tackled cancer a few years ago with much grace, strength and humility. Not only did it bring our family closer, but she made some changes to her daily life that were no longer serving her.   I hope you enjoy this blog written by my beautiful mother  on life changes she has made since battling breast cancer.

Here’ s a snippet of her story and suggestions:

“You have cancer”.  Frightening words for anyone to hear.  I was in the Home Depot parking lot, by myself, scared and crying when I received The Call.  Thousands of questions and what ifs going through my mind.  Ultimately, I was very lucky – my tumor was small and contained.  A lumpectomy, 37 days of radiation, and 4 years of estrogen blocking drugs later, and I am a survivor!

All this to say, I changed a lot in my life after this wake up call.  I have been healthy all of my life.  I have always exercised – played sports in high school and college and worked out consistently since.  I ate fairly well – I do have a sweet tooth and love to bake, but in general made healthy choices.  However, cancer made me change a lot.

LET GO OF ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS: 

My 30 year daily habit of Diet Coke was the first to go.  I gave it up, cold turkey, upon diagnosis.  I let go of all artificial sugars such as Aspartame, Splenda, Sucrose, Nutri-sweet and Equal. Strong evidence links these poisons to cancer and weight gain. Best to go with natural sugars in moderation. Grade B Maple Syrup, Local Honey, Raw Cane Sugar and/ or real fruit are best options to satisfy that sweet tooth.

BUY ORGANIC AND LOCAL:

Secondly, I try to buy organic foods.   If not available, buy from your local farmers. CSAs ( community supported agriculture) are fabulous!  The variety of fruits and produce is astounding! Check out localharvest.org to find local options near you.

LOSE THE MICROWAVE:

Next I got rid of my microwave.  Microwave cooking changes the nutrients in your food.  These are not healthy changes, but changes that cause deterioration in the human systems.  It zaps all of the good stuff out of your food. Try slow cookers, pressure cookers, or steam on the stove top.

LET GO OF TOXIC HOUSEHOLD PRODUCTS AND BEAUTY PRODUCTS: 

Our skin is our biggest organ, we absorb everything through our skin. Buy non-toxic cleaning supplies and reevaluate the beauty products you put on your skin.

Cleaning supplies are almost always filled with health-changing toxins that you won’t find listed on their labels.  If you are using products that don’t say nontoxic, you can be sure they are filled with toxins.  There are plenty of effective nontoxic products to replace the ones you use!

Get back to the basics. Eat real food, drink lots of water, if you can’t pronounce don’t consume or apply on your body. Eat food in its raw state or simply cook in coconut oil or butter. Get plenty of sleep, move your body everyday and do what makes you happy. Let go of the clutter in your house and in your relationships. Know that every obstacle is an opportunity for growth. Life is constantly changing every moment and will continue to ebb and flow until we leave this dimension.

Whatever your reality is, embrace it, soar high, inspire those around you, help those in need, love your blood, but don’t try to change them. Be patient with yourself and others around you. Give thanks for another day :)

SOUL FOOD FOR THE SKIN

The journey of clear skin.

I’ve truly have been on this road for years. An ongoing battle, I may never win, but feel more empowered and knowledgeable because of the ride. I passionately believe we all endure and suffer obstacles in life so we can enlighten others to overcome what no longer serves. Each day, a clean slate, to shed our old ways, gather new tools and apply them to our lives. Constantly learning and changing, our bodies AMAZINGLY responsive and vibrant if we actually tune into to what it needs. As we listen we are forced to slow down and open our eyes to the endless wisdom and knowledge around us, whether it be in nature or in people. So whatever your struggle may be, take it as free healing, embrace it and rise above it. I offer you a snippet of my ride in hopes that you find clarity and inspiration in it all.

I’ve had years of eczema on my arms( covered in scabs), acne all over, and full on monkey session in the bathroom sink. I’ve tried every cleanser under the sun, late night hydration, countless treatments, even antibiotics. Obsessive about washing, scrubbing and treating only led to scars and more zits. Constantly putting attention to the monsters on my face just fed the problem. Unconscious itching of  my arms and picking of my face only made it worse, continuing the cycle of scar upon scar. Your not alone here, if any of this is hitting home for you. It will get better.

I believe emotional and physical stress plays a big role in skin ailments, diet contributes, but have found best results from items in my kitchen,  keeping my hands off, breathing more and slowing down.

Diving in deep, getting to the root of the problem, healing and thriving more and more every day. My skin is healthier than it has been in years and these below have contributed to it.

Some thoughts to ponder on, ones I hope improve your skin and/or outlook on healing.

RINSE with cold water first thing. eyes, nose, teeth gums, flush it. Avoid harsh cleansers, products, lotions and potions – if you can’t eat dont put it on your face. Our skin, our biggest organ will absorbs everything!

 HYDRATE INTERNALLY first thing upon waking with warm water and lemon, lime or apple cider vinegar. Allow the water to hydrate your body, tune into what you need for the day. Let this be your restart button.   Bring water with you throughout your day. Make cultivating a hydration practice a priority. For every alcoholic or caffeinated beverage you consume, drink a glass of water. When traveling, use it as an opportunity to hydrate. I make an effort to hydrate more than eating while traveling. 

HYDRATE EXTERNALLY: Don’t let skin dry out. When our skin drys out, our pores struggle to breath, pores become clogged and then we break out. Keep moisturized. I use shea butter, coconut oil and/or olive oil. For the face:I use shea butter, allow oil to penetrate. Then run a damp cotton ball over skin to pull out any dirt. When you get out of the shower lather yourself in coconut oil, cacao butter or olive oil while skin is still damp.

SLEEP. when I’m running low on sleep, my skin becomes dehydrated, pores more visible and bags under my eyes. Sleep and water are the best medicine and free. Make it priority.

CLEAN towels and pillow cases. Wash a couple times a week.

DON’T PICK. Don’t touch your face. Don’t let your friends pick at you. Leave your face alone. Steam, exfoliate and drink a big glass of water before going in for the kill. Cover mirrors if you have to and dont get any where close to magnifying mirrors. No one will ever look that close.

LIMIT CAFFEINE/STIMULANTS ( coffee, mate, sugar, cacao, maca) during your moon time and/or stress. For me, these seem to aggregate more. Dairy and gluten can also irritate for some, try cutting back and see how your skin reacts.

MEDITATE everyday. Visualize a white light clearing and cleansing your skin. 50 % of this battle is mental, irritation on the outside is a direct reflection of what’s going on in the inside. Whatever you choose to do, believe.

COOLING FOODS: cucumber, celery, parsley, mint. Avoid spicy and fried foods when skin is on the fritz.

  • Recipe: : slice 2 cucumber thin, splash apple cider vinegar, squeeze of lime, handful fresh dill chopped, handful fresh mint, 1/2 avocado diced,  drizzle of tahini or whole yogurt, pinch of sea salt, top with toasted black sesame seeds.

REEVALUATE your relationships and levels of stress. Stress is depleting on all levels and is reflected in our skin. Let go of energy vampires and slow down. You can only change a person to a certain extent. If you feel drained and exhausted after a friend or lover leaves, take it as a sign that it is no longer serving you. Let it go and keep moving forward. All is unfolding as it should, trust in the process.  

REESTABLISH your relationship with food. Relax around food. Don’t let it consume your thoughts and behaviors. Breath deep and bless your food up before consuming. Allow your body to receive not reject your food.

– TAKE NOTE: Chinese medicine teaches us that breakouts in different regions on the body can signify toxcities those particular organs. For example, congestion on the cheeks reflects the stagnation in the lungs ( lay off the smoking or avoid second hand smoke). Congestion on the chin, usually is a result of hormonal imbalance. Focus on nourishing foods, calming activities ( yoga, meditation, walks, hikes). Bumps around the hair line and jaw line could be result from sunscreen or shampoos. Try changing and see if bumps disappear. I love Alfalfa products made with shea butter.

 

Some words.

Surrender to what you can’t control and embrace what you can. Tis the time to take your life into your own hands. Stop relying on someone or something to fix it all, which is only a band aid to the problem. Ask for what you need and the universe will provide. Clear thoughts and intention manifest quicker than you think, just try it out.

Who knows what tomorrow will bring. Make plans and dream for the future, but live each moment now. The universe has many lessons and signs right under our noses if we get out of our head and open our eyes to the endless possibilities. When the voices, lists and nonsense cloud your thoughts, try singing or move your body. Shake it, center out, tune in and listen.

AND remember simple is better, breathing is good, happiness cures all. Get out there and have fun let your mind and body run wild. Your skin, body, mind and soul will all benefit.

BLUE CORN PANCAKES

When I was in Taos, New Mexico last year I had blue corn piñon pancakes, which were delicious and an inspiration for this dish. My friend and chef over at La Cocina de Luz, Lucas Price, does another variation: buttermilk-corn pancakes with shrimp and avocado salsa. This is a combination of both creations. Savory pancakes are a great alternative to bread or tacos. These babies were on JB & ME’s menu this past week. Blue Corn- Chive pancakes with red cabbage slaw, herb and citrus shrimp, black bean -avocado- orange salsa, jalapeno-cashew cream, topped with spicy micro greens. Try to find local organic blue cornmeal. The batter kept for a couple days, which turned into a couple meals for JB & ME staff. A couple of the variations: fried egg and goat cheese;  pulled chicken with slaw, salsa and avocado; fried apples and honey all on blue corn pancakes.  Avocados and citrus are in season and  the blue corn meal and micro greens are local.

blue corn-chive pancakes with red cabbage slaw, herb and citrus shrimp, black bean avocado-orange salsa

served with a side of jalapeño-cashew cream 

blue corn chive pancakes:

1 1/2 cup ap flour

1/2 cup organic blue cornmeal

pinch of salt

1 tb raw sugar

1 tb baking powder

2 organic eggs

1 1/2- 2 cups of milk ( try almond milk)

2 tb butter or coconut oil melted

2 tb chopped chives and or garlic

directions:

mix wet ingredients, then slowly mix in with dry ingredients, EXCEPT, the baking powder. mix in baking powder right before cooking. melt more butter or coconut oil in cast iron pan and cook pancakes. turn when bubbles start to form, test a couple for seasoning. adjust salt and/or sugar.

herb and citrus shrimp

ingredients:

1 handful cilantro

1 handful parsley

1 small handful mint

1 small shallot

1 orange peeled/seeded

1 lime juiced

2 garlic cloves

pinch of sugar

pinch of salt

1/4 cup olive oil

directions:

blend all in cuisinart and marinate cleaned and deveined shrimp for an hour before serving. save some marinade for slaw. grill or sauté  shrimp in pan a couple minutes per side. for slaw use same marinade and add toasted sunflower seeds.

avocado-black bean and orange salsa

ingredients:

1 can organic black beans ( drained)

2 avocado diced

1 naval orange peeled and diced

1 handful cilantro chopped

1/2 jalapeño seeded and diced

juice of 1 lime

pinch of salt

pinch of sugar

directions:

mix all in bowl, keep avocado seed in bowl to keep avocado from turning, cover and refrigerate. great with tortilla chips too.

cashew-jalapeno cream

ingredients:

1 cup raw cashews

1 cup water

1/4 cup jalapeno

1/2 juice of lime

pinch of salt

directions:

mix all in high powered blender, until rich and creamy. season as you like

to assemble: blue corn-chive pancake, red cabbage slaw,  herb and citrus shrimp, avocado-salsa, cashew cream, micro greens.

all can be made ahead of time to make assembling a breeze:

make batter ( minus the baking soda), make marinade for shrimp , marinate slaw, make avocado-salsa – keep avocado seed in bowl to keep avocado from turning, cashew cream will keep for a couple days in the refrigerator.
